A More Thoughtful Approach to Remodeling

We're Chris and Meredith Ziegenhagel — a husband-and-wife team behind Building Concepts, a basement-first remodeling company serving Central Indiana families. For 30 years and across three states, we've built our reputation one project at a time — and we're not about to stop caring now.

  • OUR STORY

30 Years. Three States. One Standard of Work.

Building Concepts was founded in 1996 — and this is our 30th year in business.

We started in Oregon, built in Tennessee, and planted roots in Central Indiana, where we've been serving Hamilton County families ever since. Across three decades and 450+ projects, the work has changed — the homes have gotten bigger, the finishes have gotten more refined, the expectations have grown — but our approach has stayed the same.

Do it right. Plan it thoroughly. Treat every home like it matters.

Over the years, we saw the same issue repeat: beautiful upstairs homes paired with basements that felt like afterthoughts — mismatched, poorly planned, or disconnected. The disappointment usually came not from bad work, but from contractors who skipped thoughtful design.

That's the gap we decided to close. Today, Building Concepts focuses exclusively on designing and building lower levels that feel fully integrated with the homes above them. Thoughtfully planned. Carefully built. Worth every dollar.

We work primarily in Hamilton County and the surrounding Indianapolis suburbs — communities we know well, filled with families who care deeply about where they live. Our clients aren't looking for the lowest bid. They're looking for the right partner.

That's exactly who we built this company to serve.

  • MEET THE TEAM

The People Behind the Projects

Building Concepts is a true husband-and-wife team. When you work with us, you work directly with Chris and Meredith Ziegenhagel — no sales reps or project managers you'll never meet again. We're personally invested in every project from the first conversation to the final walkthrough.

Chris brings 30 years of hands-on building experience, learned from his father and honed across Oregon, Tennessee, and now Indiana. As the general contractor on every job, he oversees structural planning, moisture control, mechanical coordination, and code compliance with a methodical, no-shortcuts approach that keeps projects on schedule and built to last.

Meredith leads the design process with a rare blend of creative vision and practical insight. She studied Design Management at The Art Institute of Portland, worked as a licensed real estate agent in Central Indiana, and spent time in mortgage marketing. This background helps her translate families' needs into spaces that are both beautiful and valuable.

Outside of work, we're a busy family of three in Noblesville. When we're not on a jobsite or in a design meeting, you'll find us chasing our 4-year-old daughter to her activities, biking local trails, hiking, camping, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. Meredith also founded and teaches Creative Cubs, a popular parent-and-child art class for toddlers at Noblesville Creates — an extension of the same creativity and nurturing approach she brings to every basement design.

We don't just design and build lower levels. We design them the way we live — thoughtfully, intentionally, and with real family life in mind.

  • HOW WE WORK

What Makes Us Different

We could list our certifications here. Instead, we'd rather tell you how we think.

We Specialize in Basements — By Choice

Most remodeling companies do a little of everything. We decided a long time ago that wasn't the best way to serve our clients. Basement renovations require a specific set of skills: moisture management, mechanical integration, sound control, egress planning, and the ability to design a space that feels like part of the home — not a room that happens to be underground. When you work with a specialist, the details don't fall through the cracks.

We Design Before We Build

A lot of contractors skip the planning stage. We've built our entire process around it. Before any construction begins, we work through every decision — layout, materials, lighting, mechanical placement, finishes — so that your project moves forward without the delays and change orders that make renovations frustrating. Clarity upfront means confidence throughout.

We Think About the Whole Home — and the Long-Term Value

A basement shouldn't look like it belongs to a different house. We design every space with your existing home's style, palette, and flow in mind — so the transition from upstairs to downstairs feels intentional and seamless. Meredith's background as a licensed real estate agent in Central Indiana gives her a perspective most designers don't have: she understands how design decisions translate into real home value. Every choice we make is one you can feel good about when it matters most.

We're Honest About Investment

We don't hide costs or play pricing games. Most of our basement projects begin around $50,000 and scale with scope, finishes, and features. We share realistic ranges upfront because we respect your time—and we only want to move forward if we're genuinely the right fit.

We're Local — and That Matters

We live in Noblesville and work throughout Hamilton County and the surrounding Indianapolis suburbs. We know these communities — the neighborhoods, the builders, the homes. We've worked in Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Noblesville, and Zionsville, and we understand the standards families here expect. This isn't a service area to us. It's home.
